Logline: An American Marine, rescued from an uncertain fate by an Afghan National soldier, embarks on a surreal journey through a vast, otherworldly landscape in a Volkswagen bus. As they travel toward an unlikely destination, they confront the illusions of war, heroism, honor, survival, trauma, and identity. Director Statement: "Surfing in Afghanistan is based on 28 pages from my feature screenplay. It challenges the traditional war film narrative by rejecting the glorification and fetishization of combat and violence typical in the genre. Instead, the film explores war's psychological and existential toll through an introspective journey. It blurs the line between reality and the subconscious, confronting uncomfortable truths about war, identity, and complicity. Shot in California's high desert and coast, this film is a deeply personal exploration of the systems that shape us and the struggle to break free. Rather than indulging in the spectacle of war, Surfing in Afghanistan dismantles the myths that perpetuate it: the white savior fantasy, the illusion of heroism, and the lie that war is noble. The film isn't designed to thrill; it's meant to unnerve. I wanted to strip war of its romance and leave behind its raw psychological and moral wreckage. It refuses to offer the usual comforts of the genre, but it knows it sits on the same shelf as the classics."
