CHOPIN: Ballad No. 4 in F minor, op. 52 encore Improvisation by Fiorentino: My Gentle Heart (anon.)/Embraceable You (Gershwin) Sergio Fiorentino, piano (Yamaha Grand) As the first solo recital at the Newport Music Festival 1996 had been such a big success, Fiorentino was invited also for the next festival in 1997. In fact Dr. Malkovich declared him engaged "for the rest of his life" which, alas, would not last for too long. Dr. Malkovich had the idea to present the pianist in a special "Mini Recital", as he called it, only for sponsors of the festival. The pianist went from Naples to Newport for this occasion which took place at Ochre Court on 3 April 1997 and then played on 6 April a first recital at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. I was given a video of the "Mini Recital" which is presented here. The programme was chosen by Dr. Malkovich himself, hence occurs the middle movement of the Rachmaninoff 2nd sonata. Those here who do not want to listen to the whole recital may go right away to 39:32 where the pianist sits down for a beautiful encore which he improvised on the spot to the delight of his "American listeners".
