Patrick (Paddy) Hannan discovered gold in the area that was to become Kalgoorlie in 1893, soon after this (6 months), the first mine was started. Now located as part of the Mining Hall of Fame complex, just to the north of Kalgoorlie, this is a tour of a very small section of that mine, now open to tourists to gain an insight into the mining practices in the late 1800's. A hard life it must have been, chasing the gold in the seams of quartz which were to be found running deep into the earth. Kalgoorlie, one of the larger mines on earth, 'streets paved with gold', a truism, the worthless mullock from the mine was once used as road base for the streets of the town. This was later found to be high grade Telluride, a sulphide of gold. Soon the streets were dug up and returned to the mine for processing. Such yarns abound it this modern outback town which in many ways still retains a frontier feel to this day.
