Adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO) is the most common cause of morbidity following an abdominal operation. Shannon Acker, MD and her research team led a study that examined data from nine centers part of the Western Pediatric Surgery Research Consortium to determine the benefits of using an enteral contrast protocol in the case of bowel obstruction following abdominal surgery. While enteral contrast-based protocols for adults with ASBO are associated with decreased need for surgery and shorter hospitalization, there is not much pediatric-specific data. This study enrolled 136 patients, ages 1 to 20, who were diagnosed with ABSO.
