Hip pain from FAI Syndrome or Hip Impingement is something that affects a lot of young active and athletic individuals. It is a hip condition that can often be mis treated, mid diagnosed and poorly managed. Often the causes of the hip pain are was are misunderstood so it is important that also those who have hip pain have a good understanding. Patient often get old things regarding their FAI hip pain such as a risk of developing arthritis and potentially that there I a risk of needing a total hip replacement if they do not have surgery. That is not always the case and I will also endeavour to cover this more in future videos. This video is a simple explanation for what hip impingement is for those that are not medically trained but want to understand a little more about the problem. Further videos with covering things a little bit more specifically, like how to assess it, what is the best type of scan, what exercises work and what to avoid. WHAT IS A CAM Cam morphology, a distinct bony morphology of the hip, is prevalent in many athletes, and a risk factor for hip-related pain and osteoarthritis. Secondary cam morphology, due to existing or previous hip disease (eg, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease), is well-described. Cam morphology not clearly associated with a disease is a challenging concept for clinicians, scientists and patients. The risk of primary cam morphology (and FAI syndrome) varies by sports with higher cumulative stresses on the hip particularly during adolescent years seen as ⬆️ risk of development. WHAT IS A PINCER 🧠Pincer morphology is common mainly in a female population and causes over coverage of the femoral head. This can also be due to coxa profunda or acetabular retroversion. Why are pincers more prevalent in a female demographic? Possibly due to evolutionary changes and the variances in pelvic anatomy compared to men. 🧠 Studies have found that Coxa profunda (a deeper hip socket) was highly prevalent and it was present in 77% of pain free hips, being particularly prevalent in women. Other studies have shown that hips showed a prevalence of isolated pincer morphology in 56% of males and 47% of females that had no pain.
