"Once our language is saved, our community is saved." - Elder/Fluent Speaker Gerald Meguinis The Tsuut'ina language is the official language of the Tsuut'ina people. It is one of the many unique and distinct variations of the Dene Language Family. The Dene Language Family stretches from Northern Siberia, Russia to the tip of South America. It is the largest indigenous language family in North America. Other languages classified under the Dene Language Family include: Navajo, Apache, Tłingit, Tłincho, Ket of Northern Siberia, Denesułine, Hupa, Beaver, Chilcotin, Gwich'in, the Aztecs have recently stated that they are Dene and many more. UNESCO declared 2019 the Year of Indigenous Languages. The International Year of Indigenous Languages aims to focus attention on the risks confronting indigenous languages, especially those significant for development, reconciliation, good governance, and peacebuilding. It aims to improve quality of life, wider international cooperation, and visibility and strengthened intercultural dialogue to reaffirm the continuity of indigenous languages and cultures.
