In Access, an Autonumber field is a numeric field that starts at 1 and increments for each new record created in the table it belongs to. Often it is used as a Primary Key for a table, and values cannot be added by the user because they are automatic. However, what happens when the need arises that specific values need to be entered into an autonumber field, perhaps for data recovery or other purposes? In this episode, let's take a closer look at how we can manage and even manually populate an autonumer field. This is not a task that MS Access developers have to do often, but it can very quickly save you A LOT of time if you find yourself in the position where the data in one or more dependent tables need to be rebuilt, or even a set of records inside a table with autonumbers needs to be rebuilt by the admin/dev in a particular way before returning the application to regular production use.
