✨ Welcome to our one-night stay at the McMenamins Crystal Hotel in Portland, Oregon! ✨ This funky, triangular-shaped boutique hotel is right in the heart of downtown Portland, just south of the Pearl District, making it the perfect base for exploring the city’s vibrant culture, dining, and nightlife. After arriving, we checked into our uniquely themed room and then headed downstairs to Hal’s Café for dinner. The menu surprised us with flavors completely different from the other McMenamins properties we had just stayed at (Edgefield Winery and The Grand Lodge). We ordered loaded tots with pork belly and brie sauce alongside crispy wings in a sweet glaze—both absolutely delicious! We later learned that Hal’s Café was formerly known as Zeus Café, and renamed in honor of beloved McMenamins employees, which adds even more heart to the experience. 🌞 In the morning, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Hal’s Café, including their signature Hal’s Migas. The restaurant is filled with stained glass, and there’s a beautiful legend that when the sunlight hits just right, the patterns play a favorite song in colored light on the floor. It’s details like this that make the Crystal Hotel so special. The Crystal Hotel is often called the center of the McMenamins universe, and after staying here, we can see why. Its history, quirky design, and unmatched atmosphere create an unforgettable stay. Each guest room is inspired by a different song or musician. We stayed in Sleeping Lessons by The Shins, complete with a striking custom headboard. We take you inside for a full room tour and a peek at the shared bathrooms, before heading down to one of the most unique features of the property—the indoor soaking pool. Unlike the outdoor soaking pools we visited at other McMenamins locations, this one is indoors, with a tiki vibe, and open late until 1 a.m. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a night in downtown Portland. The next day, we explored the rest of the property. We stop in at Al’s Den, a cozy subterranean bar, then step into the lively Annex Bar, and of course, we couldn’t miss the legendary Crystal Ballroom—famous for live music, dancing, and its famous floating floor. Whether you’re here for a concert, a romantic getaway, or just to experience Portland’s funky side, the Crystal Hotel offers something for everyone. This was the third and final stop on our McMenamins adventure—after unforgettable visits to Edgefield Winery and The Grand Lodge—and the Crystal Hotel was the perfect grand finale. Each property has its own charm, but together they showcase why McMenamins is so much more than just a hotel chain. It’s history, art, food, drink, and community all wrapped into one magical experience. If you’re planning a trip to Portland, we highly recommend booking a stay at the Crystal Hotel McMenamins. Between the unique rooms, creative dining at Hal’s Café, the late-night soaking pool, and the vibrant energy of the Crystal Ballroom, it’s an experience you won’t forget. 👉 Watch until the end as we recap our week at all three McMenamins properties and share our highlights.
