Lazar Meir's parents did not remember his exact date of birth, so when the time came to receive the American citizenship, he indicated the Independence Day of the United States – July 4 – and became Louis Burt Mayer. Success of one of the first film producers in history, the founder of the most successful film studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, did not come to him by inheritance. His poor family, who fled from Dymer in the Kyiv region after Tsar Alexander III introduced the “May rules” forbidding Jews to settle in the countryside, acquire real estate and trade, had to save money for tickets for a steamer to America during several years. It was by chance that Mayer got into the film industry by taking a part-time job in a cinema, but he soon realized how much potential was hidden there. In 1915, having bought the distribution rights for the film “The Birth of a Nation” for $25,000, he earned several million and since then he was steadily moving up in his career. Although today Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cannot boast of an outstanding success and was even put up for sale at the end of 2020, the film studio had been the most successful in the world under Mayer’s management. There are over 4,000 films and 200 Oscars in the film company’s collection.
