13th Century Keith Marischal Church lies on the estate of Keith Marischal in East Lothian. The estate is the ancestral home of the Keith Clan. The modern baronial house replaced the castle which was the ancient seat of the Keith’s. Robert Keith was a key figure and commander under King Robert the Bruce. They were honoured with the hereditary titles of Marshals (Marischals) and enjoyed military and political authority. In 1320 they were granted vast lands in the north east of Scotland with castles at Dunnottar and Inverugie in Buchan. My film focuses on the knight William de Keith who was one of the party of crusaders under Sir James Douglas tasked with taking Bruce’s heart to the Holy Land in 1330. Douglas and most of his comrades would be slain in battle at Teba, Granada, and William de Keith was responsible for returning to Scotland with the remains of Douglas and the heart of The Bruce. Where was the crusader William de Keith buried? Does the medieval grave stone at Keith Marischal belong to him? My film explores the 13th century church and the possible lost grave of the knight William Keith.
