Many people believe traditional African marriage was permanent and that divorce did not exist before colonisation. But history tells a different story. Across precolonial Africa, marriage and separation were often governed by customary law, negotiated between families, mediated by elders, and rooted in community structures rather than state courts. So what changed when colonial rule arrived? In this video, we explore how colonial administrations introduced Christian marriage laws, codified “customary law,” and reshaped African marriage systems in ways that still influence society today. Was African tradition always restrictive, or did colonial systems make marriage more rigid? This is Real Africa Stories, where we question inherited narratives and explore African history beyond the versions commonly taught. #africanhistory #precolonialafrica #africanculture #colonialhistory #divorceinafrica #realafricastories
