"Stop-and-chop" is a nuclear disassembly technique popularized by Paul Koch MD. It works well for all grades of nuclei. It is a good fall back technique, and is a variant of "divide and conquer" phacoemulsification. Combined with vertical or horizontal chopping, after the initial hemi-division, makes quick work emulsifying most cataracts. This technique is easy to master and is a useful tool to have in one's surgical armamentarium. As this is an in-the-bag technique corneas are usually crystal clear day 1 postoperatively, leading to good vision.
