In this extended interview from the Season 2 premiere of La Veillée (Fall 2023), take a ride with Christine Verdin, Executive Director of École Pointe-au-Chien at the southern tip of South Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, as she tells the story of her fight for her school, her community, and her language. From being banned from public school during racial segregation to being punished in school for speaking her native Louisiana, to being the first in her tribe to obtain a graduate degree, to becoming the principal of her childhood school but now running in her native language, Christine's story is one of a kind. After being expelled from public school during racial segregation and punished for speaking her native Louisiana language at school, she became the first member of her French-speaking Native American tribe to earn a higher education degree. Since 2022, she has been the principal of her childhood school—now run in her native language. Christine's story is unique.
