(10 Mar 1996) Natural Sound Thailand bid its final farewell Sunday to its beloved Princess Mother. Over four thousand people - many dressed in elaborate court costumes - took part in the lavish funeral procession. The mother of King Bhumibol died last year. Her body will be cremated tonight. A nation controlled its grief as it bade its final farewells to the woman who began her life as a commoner but who later married a Prince. During her lifetime she bore her husband two sons who were destined to be Kings - thereby preserving Thailand's ancient royal lineage. The Princess Mother may have lived in majestic splendour but she never forgot her humble roots. She devoted her life to bringing proper medical care and good education to the remotest areas of Thailand. Her good works earned her the lifelong respect and love of her countrymen. The elaborate Buddhist funeral rites began in the early morning and the entire event was televised throughout the whole of Thailand - taking up fifteen hours of air time. Her son King Bhumibol Aduyadej and Queen Sirikit visited the Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace to perform religious rites for the symbolic cremation. The Queen's body was transported in a two hundred year old chariot, to the site of a specially constructed seven tier funeral pyre. The actual cremation will occur later in the evening (Sunday), with the King and Queen presiding over the ceremony. According to ancient Thai tradition her soul will return to the heavenly dwelling she enjoyed before this life. The funeral procession is an elaborate show of pomp and circumstance, and Thais from all walks of life turned out in force to pay their respects. They've had almost a year to mourn the loss of a woman who made a profound contribution to their society. Her legacy will carry on despite her death.
