This watch was just £65 when I bought it DIRECT from the AliExpress Steeldive OFFFICIAL STORE Check price here : https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_oCJ... - it arrived with no duty to pay and in less than 2 weeks If you prefer to shop on Amazon Global : https://amzn.to/43nov12 The Steeldive SD1970 divers watch is reviewed by Tristan Haskins of ChronoDivers.co.uk The SD1970 is an homage to the Seiko 6105 - aka the Captain Willard Watch - aka Seiko Turtle homage - aka - the Apocalypse Now watch. NARRATIVE Today we’re taking a quick look at the Steeldive SD1970 — a watch that’s become something of a cult favourite among budget dive watch fans. It’s a clear homage to the Seiko 6105, also known as the ‘Captain Willard,’ and for well under £100, it’s hard to ignore. But is it all good news? Let’s break it down.” The case is classic cushion-shaped — very much in line with the original Willard design — and it wears nicely despite its 43.5mm diameter. It’s around 13mm thick, so not overly chunky, and thanks to the short lugs, it doesn’t overhang even on average wrists. The finishing is decent for the price — a mix of brushing on the top and polished sides. Personally, I’d have preferred a full brushed finish for a more tool-watch feel, but it’s not a dealbreaker. The dial is clean, with applied indices, a framed date window at three, and a subtle red ‘200M’ printed on the lower half for a bit of colour. On the wrist, it’s surprisingly comfortable. The bracelet is solid enough — better than expected at this price — but I actually prefer it on a waffle-style rubber strap. It cuts the weight down and suits the vintage diver aesthetic nicely. Lug width is 20mm, so strap options are wide open, which is always a bonus if you like to switch things up Now, let’s talk about the bezel. It’s a 120-click ceramic insert with full lume. The action is solid — not too tight, not sloppy either — and everything lines up well. That’s refreshing, especially when you consider how many big brands still struggle with this Inside is the ever-reliable NH35A movement from Seiko. 24 jewels, hacking, hand-winding, and a 41-hour power reserve. Accuracy is quoted at -20 to +40 seconds per day, but most examples — mine included — tend to run much better than that out of the box So, what’s the verdict? The Steeldive SD1970 delivers a lot for the money: solid specs, good build quality, and that distinctive retro diver charm. It’s not perfect — the lume mismatch and slightly fiddly crown could be improved — but for the price, it’s an easy recommendation if you're after a daily beater or a budget dive watch with real character. Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried one, or if there’s another homage you think is worth a look. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one.
