A lot of people interested in art are turned off by the potential toxicity of oil painting. I think oils are a beautiful, irreplaceable medium, so I wanted to discuss best practices for painting as toxin-free as possible, as well as proper disposal of oil waste and correctly storing your supplies. Understanding what materials are toxic and why really helps! I hope to dispel some fears and show you how I paint with non-toxic methods. I'll go over three main points: 1. Solvents, why they're toxic, how they're used, and how to paint without solvents. Most artists know turpentine is super toxic, but there are some solvents out there like lavender spike oil that are advertised as safer and non-toxic, but they might not be!! 2. The type of pigments that are toxic, like lead and cadmium, and how to use them safely (or replace them). 3. Flammability of solvents and oils (it's really not that scary!) and how to dispose of oil waste and store your supplies. The more you know, the more empowered you'll be to try oil painting without fear :) List of toxic paint pigments: https://base.binus.ac.id/2017/12/28/s...
