Biology gives new insights into why men masturbate. Humans are primates and as such, we are part of the primate order, closely related to Gorillas, Chimpanzees, and Bonobos. In this video on UroChannel, Dr. med. Dr. phil. Stefan Buntrock, urologist from Göttingen, delves into the intriguing new research, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Vast datasets were utilized and advanced calculations to model the evolution of masturbation within the primate order, paying particular attention to wild animals' behaviors to avoid captivity biases. Not all primates masturbate, but the behavior has been present in the ancestral haplorrhines, the "dry-nosed primates," a category that includes humans. The question arises: why do some primates engage in this activity? Since it seemingly doesn't directly contribute to survival or procreation, some have considered it as pathological behavior. However, the new research provides fascinating insights. According to the postcopulatory selection hypothesis, male non-ejaculatory masturbation before intercourse may expedite ejaculation, giving low-ranking males a chance to reproduce before being displaced by higher-ranking rivals. Additionally, pre-copulatory masturbation with ejaculation might enhance sperm quality by eliminating inferior sperm, ensuring high-quality sperm in the subsequent ejaculate. Moreover, the study supports the Pathogen Avoidance Hypothesis, suggesting that masturbation may serve as a strategy to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Forceful ejaculation clears the urethra, reducing the number of pathogens in subsequent ejaculates, which could potentially protect fertility. While the significance of masturbation might not be obvious on a conscious level, the study suggests that this behavior is rooted in ancient behavioral programs deeply ingrained in our primate brains. It could be a milestone study shedding light on a relatively unexplored field.
