(25 Sep 1999) Eng/Indonesian Student-led protesters have clashed with police in Jakarta, brushing aside a government policy reversal intended to abate the rioters. One student was killed, raising the death toll to six in two days in some of the worst street riots since the demonstrations that led to the ouster of President Suharto last year. Student demonstrators and relatives have begun counting the cost of two days of violence. About 1-hundred students gathered early on Saturday at the University of Indonesia for what they called a memorial service for the dead. Indonesia exploded in anger earlier this week when the country's outgoing parliament adopted a law granting the armed forces expanded emergency powers. The government said on Friday that it was suspending the new law in a decision seen as a blow to the nation's powerful army, but the protests waged on for hours after the announcement. The bill gave the military sweeping powers to override civil liberties during a state of emergency, and the students feared that the already powerful army could ultimately use its enhanced power to seize total control of the country. But the government argued that the bill was less severe than the law it superseded, because it would require the approval of the civilian government before a state of emergency could be declared. Six people have already been killed in the riots including one policeman. The chief doctor of the Jakarta morgue, said all civilian casualties in the morgue had been killed by live ammunition, although police said they mainly used rubber bullets. (English) "All death from...cause of death from gunshot wounds. From distance, not close range -- but distance range. All of the victim had only one entrance wound. Only one gunshot wound." SUPER CAPTION: Abdul Munim, Coroner Jakarta morgue One of the places that came under fire in the continuing riots overnight was the Australian embassy. No immediate damage was visible and Indonesian troops were quickly deployed outside to avoid further incident. Meanwhile relatives and friends were burying their dead. A huge procession followed one student on his last journey through the streets of Jakarta The family's grief was obvious. (Indonesian) "I really feel that I've lost him. I was hoping that he could help me carry my name and do better than me. That's all I wanted from him. But that's it. He won't be able to achieve his dreams. We can't say anything if God has decided to take him." SUPER CAPTION: Yappitsing, Father of dead student By saluting his coffin , the fellow students showed their respect to this latest victim of the ongoing crisis in Indonesia.
