Micro History: First Intifada (1987-1993)

In December 1987, a false rumor spread that Israelis had murdered four Palestinians. Although untrue, this rumor ignited a wildfire of violence and terrorism as the Palestinian population reacted with massive riots and spontaneous attacks against Israelis. For more than four years, the uprising that became known as the First Intifada wreaked havoc throughout Israel. Both IDF soldiers and Israeli civilians were targeted. Violent assaults with homemade explosives, hand grenades, and guns were the common tools in terrorists’ arsenal, leaving Israelis living in fear and dread. With violence already permeating much of their society, Palestinians also soon began turning their violence on each other. Accusations of collaborating with Israel sparked the PLO and its rival factions to begin killing their own people. By the end of the intifada in 1993, 200 Jews had been killed but more than 1,100 Palestinians were dead – most of them killed by other Palestinians. During this period, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat lost control of the people he claimed to represent and this chaos allowed the rise of Hamas as a rival faction that has terrorized Israel and the Palestinian people for more than 30 years. The first intifada inflicted lasting damage on Israeli consciousness as Israelis became less optimistic about peace with the Palestinians and were confronted with a partner, the Palestinian leadership, which glaringly refused to seek peace, refusing to recognize the Jewish state’s right to exist.
