As the Red Army reconnaissance plane is flying over the Transdanubian Region in Hungary, it captures nothing but a vast patchwork of fields punctuated by occasional clusters of forest. Quiet Hungarian villages dot the landscape, with Lake Velence shimmering to the northeast and the vast expanse oaf Lake Balaton to the southwest. The tranquility of the scenery carries no indication that the area is swarming with German and Hungarian troops ready to attack. Despite the deceptive calm, the Soviets are on the lookout, as if they know the enemy is there, waiting for the right moment to attack. The winter had passed, nature was rousing and so was the enemy. After they lost the entire eastern Europe from their hands, the Germans were ready to strike back.
