"This year's YoungArts Backyard Ball Performance was inspired by the frightening and disturbing events of last spring and summer. Because YoungArts is striving to identify and encourage the next generation of creative makers and innovators, this show was created from the point of view of youth struggling to understand the world that they are inheriting. "With the help of our writer, Danny Rothschild, the performance is framed by a letter to a child written by a well-meaning parent. While it is never said what happened between them, we are led to believe that the child feels in some way maligned, misled and betrayed. As Director, I tried to expand this to a more universal, time-honored struggle between generations and find reconciliation and hope. "This piece is titled 'Is the Sky Falling?' It's less about Chicken Little, a gullible little bird that falls victim to evil and opportunistic intentions, than a general sense of unease that many, particularly the young, have in the face of an uncertain and ever-changing world. "Through original song, dance, text, video and music, the performance explores the dissatisfaction that youth often feel in the face of the world they inherit, their ultimate struggle to overcome that feeling, and our responsibility as human beings." - Bill T.
