reuploaded to defeat the corporate giants and machines. For over 45 years , the Quiet Storm radio format has been one of the most recognizable institutions in black music. It’s a late night programming block meant to share romantic, lush R&B of the past and present. It’s something that black communities of all generations can identify both sonically and culturally. Whether it be the romantic sensuous ballads or smooth voices from its DJs, we can always tell when the Quiet Storm is approaching. I wanted to celebrate Black History Month and Valentine’s Day by honoring the Quiet Storm’s origin story, which begins in 1976 Washington D.C. with a Howard University student named Melvin Lindsay. While substituting for a radio DJ on a rainy Sunday night, an unexperienced Lindsay filled the airwaves with R&B and jazz fusion slow jams from his personal collection, immediately sparking a radio revolution. Although we lost Lindsay to the AIDS epidemic, his voice and his music has lived on ever since that rainy Sunday night in 1976. This all vinyl mix is a curation of love songs Linsday played himself in the Quiet Storm’s early years as well as songs from my family’s collection that I’d thought to be a perfect fit. Every song is special to me, him, and his legacy and what better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with some of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard.
