Dedicated to Goddess Lairai, this annual celebration attracts thousands of devotees from across Goa and beyond. The main highlight is the unique ritual of walking on burning embers (homkhan), performed by hundreds of brave devotees as a mark of devotion and surrender to the goddess. The atmosphere during the jatra is electric – with traditional music, colorful processions, and a deep sense of spiritual energy that fills the air. Held typically in April or May, it’s a rare blend of ancient tradition, community gathering, and unshakable faith that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor. Lairai Devi Jatra is one of the most unique and powerful religious festivals in Goa, held in the village of Shirgao in Bicholim taluka. This grand event is dedicated to Goddess Lairai, a revered deity believed to be one of the seven sisters of Goa’s Hindu pantheon. The festival is famous for its Agnidivya (fire-walking ritual), where hundreds of devotees walk barefoot over burning embers as a test of faith and devotion. In 2025, the jatra is scheduled to take place on May 2nd, and thousands of devotees from all over Goa and Maharashtra are expected to participate. The entire village of Shirgao transforms into a vibrant, spiritual hub filled with religious fervor, traditional rituals, and festive celebrations.
