Joe Biden’s gone straight to work, dismantling the legacy of four years of Donald Trump. Hours after moving into the Oval Office, the new President jettisoned many of his predecessor’s most controversial policies – including the so-called Muslim Ban and rejoining the Paris Agreement. The White House says Mr Biden is taking actions to “combat the challenges” of four converging crises – the coronavirus pandemic, the resulting economic crisis, climate change and racial equality. Boris Johnson’s hailing Joe Biden’s decision to rejoin the Paris Agreement on global warming as “hugely positive news”. The new president’s signed an executive order rescinding Donald Trump’s walkout from the international accord. Mr Johnson’s pledging to seek further global co-operation on the environment when the UK hosts a key United Nations summit this autumn. He tweeted “I look forward to working with our US partners to do all we can to safeguard the planet.” The education secretary says schools will “very much be the first to open” when lockdown is eased, Gavin Williamson also says teachers, parents and pupils will be given two weeks notice for the return to class and that he “certainly hoped” that would be by Easter. But the Cabinet minister told Sky News it would not happen before the pressure on the NHS starts to ease. Ministers are being urged to intervene after an Evening Standard investigation revealed how ineligible people were able to jump the queue for vaccines by exploiting an IT loophole. Some who are not yet eligible have managed to secure jabs by using links being shared on WhatsApp and social media. Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth’s warning vulnerable and at risk people now face “waiting longer” for life saving injections. The Department of Health says anyone “tries to circumnavigate the system” will be turned away at vaccination centres. Boris Johnson’s promising 20 million pounds for flood defences in Manchester after devastating rains in the north. Around 2,000 homes have been evacuated as river levels in some areas remain at “dangerously high levels”. There are more than 180 flood warnings in place – and a further 33 in Wales. And finally… 22-year-old Poet Amanda Gorman says she’s “on the floor” after her books hit the number one and two slots on the Amazon book charts following her inauguration performance – and they’re not even out yet. The Los Angeles writer’s being hailed by critics across the world for her poem The Hill We Climb, which she wrote after watching the Capitol Hill riots on January 6th. It’s also the title of her works which hit the top spot shortly after the ceremony, followed by her Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem book – neither is released until September.
