The focus of this Pharmacology collection is on the Function of the Sympathetic Nervous System, Classification, and Sympathomimetic and Sympatholytic Classification. ▬ 📃 Nervous System The nervous system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that controls and coordinates the functions of the body. It is divided into the central nervous system (CNS), consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which includes all the nerves outside the CNS. 👉 Central Nervous System The CNS processes and integrates information from the body and the environment. The brain is responsible for various functions such as cognition, sensory perception, motor control, and emotions. The spinal cord serves as a pathway for communication between the brain and the rest of the body. 👉 Peripheral Nervous System The PNS includes the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system controls voluntary movements and transmits sensory information from the body to the CNS. It includes sensory neurons that carry signals from sensory organs to the CNS and motor neurons that transmit signals from the CNS to the muscles. ▬ 📜 Sympathomimetics Sympathomimetics, also known as adrenergic agonists, are drugs that mimic the effects of sympathetic nervous system activation. They work by stimulating adrenergic receptors and increasing the release or inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine or epinephrine. Sympathomimetics have various therapeutic uses depending on their specific mechanisms of action and receptor selectivity. Some sympathomimetics are used to treat conditions such as asthma, where they act on beta-adrenergic receptors in the lungs, causing relaxation of the bronchial smooth muscles and opening the airways. Others can be used to treat nasal congestion, by constricting blood vessels in the nasal mucosa. Sympathomimetics can also be used in emergency medicine to increase blood pressure in cases of severe hypotension or shock. ▬ 📃 Sympatholytics Sympatholytics, also known as adrenergic blockers or adrenergic antagonists, are drugs that inhibit the action of the sympathetic nervous system. They work by blocking the adrenergic receptors that are usually activated by neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and epinephrine (also known as adrenaline). By blocking these receptors, sympatholytics reduce or block the effects of sympathetic stimulation. Sympatholytics have several therapeutic applications. For example, they are commonly used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure (hypertension), as they decrease the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to a reduction in heart rate and blood pressure. Sympatholytics can also be used to manage certain cardiac arrhythmias, migraines, glaucoma, and symptoms of anxiety such as rapid heartbeat and tremors. ▬ 🎬 5500+ sqadia.com Medical Videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 👩🏻⚕️ Accessible Medical Student Education 24/7/365 💡 Simplifying Medical Learning 💪 Study Hard, Dream Big, Achieve More
