D1NZ Drifting Championship Series - Round 3 Highlights - Taupo Motorsport Park 2011

Highlights coverage from Round 3 of the Cody's D1NZ National Drifting Championship Series held at Taupo Motorsport Park! Rain was forecast for the weekend but Practice day was all sun and shine as we flew up above the track thanks to Garden City Helicopters, capturing some stunning video of the cars attacking the infield reverse section at Taupo Raceway. Favored by everyone in pitlane, the Reverse Track configuration produces some of the tightest and closest drifting in the country. This year it played host to Round 3 of the Cody's D1NZ Championship Series where Cole Armstrong in the V Energy R34 Skyline leads the title chase with Mad Mike Whiddett in the Redbull RX7 close behind - a battle of the energy drinks. Fresh with confidence after wining Round 2 at Pukekohe Raceway in November was Curt Whittaker in the 2JZ Powered All Black R34 Skyline, sitting 3rd in the points without any major backing Curt and the Whittaker Motorsport team where out to proove themselves again in the hopes of securing funding for next year. The All-Black Skyline is easily a fan favorite with the Australasian Drift Champ behind the wheel. Qualifying was a mixed bag as the skies opened up raining halfway through the session, Daynom Templeman however was on form laying down consistent lines all day long. With no car issues to contend with the NAC backed Zenith Motorsport team could properly focus on car setup for the weekend and with $250 cash from Wongs Kitchen for pole position you can be sure the team were well fed that night! Andrew Redward suffered Mechanical issues in the Nankang Tyres S14, reverting again to a borrowed car for the round. Despite being behind the wheel of a different machine Redward pushed through in qualifying to claim 2nd. 3x Defending Champion Gaz Whiter claimed 3rd spot on the Top32 Grid battling mild steering issues, Gaz clearly stepping up his game after an average start to the season back at Manfield. Rain continued to threaten the rest of the day although a dry line managed to stay throughout the Top16. Round 3 proved to be another exciting and unpredictable competition with Jason Sellers in the Supercharged Batteries Laurel being named the Giant Killer after knocking out Mad Mike in one of the closest battles of the season so far. Sellers surprised the field after a hard fought season of technical troubles to push through and finish fourth. Continuing the upset flavor was the little AE85 that could, Jock Bennett knocking out Championship Leader Cole Armstrong in the Top 16 and Mac Kwok in the Milwaukee V8 S13 in the Top8. Jock and the little corolla would finish 3rd after pairing up with Jason Sellers in the 3-4th decider. Daynom Templeman however would continue his fine form through to the final taking out the round win after another close duel with Gaz Whiter in the Tectaloy S14. Templeman claiming $5000 in cash and prizes from Alcotane and putting Rotor power back on the podium in his first ever D1NZ Round win!
