Technique Tuesday: (Apologies for the lack of audio) Troubleshooting back breath! Here are three ways to find back breath if this is a challenge for you - so many of us hold stress and the weight of the world in our lower back. And it’s our back that allows the most room for your lungs to fill and the diaphragm to descend - because there aren’t as many organs in the way, in short! In each of these exercises, you create a wall for your front ab that you do not want to expand into - and you use props or opening from gravity for feedback for the back ribs to open and expand. 1. Lean against a wall with knees slightly bent and a cushion or rolled towel/blanket to give you feedback about whether your back ribs are moving and opening - aka resisting the prop. 2. Bridge pose, hips in the air, shoulder blades and skull on the ground, feet on the ground with heels pulling towards the booty. Focus on breathing into the back ribs where gravity is helping. 3. Forward fold where your own legs act as a check for the front abdominals to stop them expanding so you can focus on the stretch and opening in the back. What helps you most?
