In this video, Pastor Daniel discusses the anxiety disorder of phobias to determine if it would be considered sinful for someone to have one. Per mentalhealth.gov: "A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder. It is a strong, irrational fear of something that poses little or no actual danger.... People with phobias try to avoid what they are afraid of. If they cannot, they may experience: Panic and fear Rapid heartbeat Shortness of breath Trembling A strong desire to get away" https://www.mentalhealth.gov/what-to-... Considering this definition, Pastor Daniel does not see how a Phobia would necessarily be considered sinful unless a person allows their anxiety to turn to hatred and mistreatment of others. Homophobia is a term that is often used to refer to someone who hates or disapproves of homosexuality or homosexuals themselves. None of these, hate or disapproval, seem to fit the definition of a phobia and, thus, it is reasonable to conclude that the term is often misused. When referring to homophobia by it's literal meaning, it would simply be referring to someone who, for whatever reason, has an anxiety disorder that makes it difficult for them to be around someone that they perceive to be homosexual. Because this can certainly be a hindrance to the person with the phobia, as well as to those around them, Pastor Daniel recommends that those who actually have a psychological phobia should try to find professional help. However, there is still nothing necessarily sinful about having the condition of a phobia. Because of this, Christians need to be careful not to condemn or be hateful to people who have actual phobias. For example, if a young person was traumatized by a man, which led them to develop androphobia (fear and anxiety of men), then as Christians, we should not be hateful towards the person who developed the phobia but should, instead, be loving towards them by helping them get past their phobia. As was suggested earlier, the term homophobia is often misused in todays society. It is often used to refer to anyone who might disagree with the lifestyle. This, of course, has nothing to do with phobias and is likely insulting to those who actually suffer from phobias. Disagreeing with someone is not equivalent to having a phobia. Additionally, disagreeing with someone does not mean that you hate them, nor does hating someone mean that someone has a phobia. This misconception, for whatever reason, seems to be very popular in society. To clarify, in this video, Pastor Daniel is not advocating for homophobia or homosexuality. He was simply making a video based on the question, is any phobia inherently sinful?
