Randall Thompson (1899-1983): Symphony No. 3 in A Minor (1947-1949) CBS Symphony Orchestra -Thor Johnson, conducting The least known of the Thompson's three symphonies, the Third was composed between the years 1947 through 1949. It is my favorite of the three symphonies, very melodic and lyrical. One writer states: "Third Symphony of 1949...rather sank without much trace after its premiere and there is no doubt that, by the standards of the time, it is an old-fashioned composition, but it does fizz along with an infectious energy which is never less than cheerful and uplifting." Movements: 1. Largo elegiaco 2. Allegro appassionato 3. Lento tranquillo 4. Allegro vivace This recording by Thor Johnson conducting the CBS Symphony Orchestra was air-checked on 16" transcription disks. (I have no date, but this could be one of the earliest performances.) I make no apologies for the surface noise on this rare find which I have from a tape of the original disks. At times it is bad, but for those wanting pure fidelity and the best of sound, I refer you to the only commercial recording of the symphony available.(*See below.)
