For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of hearing my music arranged for strings — to bring the warmth, depth, and emotional range of a string quartet into conversation with the language of jazz. With the incredible help of Dan Selsick, (whose brilliant arrangements brought my ideas to life), we jointly arranged the music and an ensemble of exceptional musicians, we created something truly special — a performance that fused jazz piano, bass, and drums with the rich textures of a string quartet. Paths of Light String Quartet is more than a blending of jazz and classical; it’s a proposal for a new kind of musical thinking. By drawing on the improvisational strategies of jazz and the interpretive depth of chamber music, I’ve tried to create a space where new musical knowledge can emerge where traditions are not fixed categories but evolving systems capable of deep and transformative dialogue. In Paths of Light String Quartet, I explore a dialogue between two historically distinct performance traditions: the jazz piano trio and the classical string quartet. Through my original compositions and arrangements, I don’t aim simply to blend genres — I want to create a musical space that actively investigates the aesthetic, technical, and philosophical frameworks that shape jazz and classical chamber music.
