Through the stress of finding a partner, how important is the support of friends and family? Is not being able to find companionship causing one to be labelled “commitment-phobic”? Is being single a resistance now? Is it a movement by a generation that is demanding better relationships for themselves? We spoke to Anusha, Rishi, Arjun, Disha, and Vismaya, who shared their experiences interacting with family, friends and society when it comes to the topic of being in a relationship. Moderated wonderfully by our Producer Dhriti, the episode was a free-flowing conversation where everyone shared their lived experiences, some laughter, their pains and hopes for the future. _____ Anusha Venkatesh is a 32-year-old Product Marketing Manager for an AI company in Bangalore. She’s been single for a decade, navigating the wild world of dating apps, matrimonial sites, and even some good old-fashioned matchmaking both in India and in Canada. She’d like to be thought of as a serial dater, seasoned by the highs and lows of modern romance. Despite the crazy dating scene driving marriage-minded folks away, she’s an eternal optimist, believing that kind, like-minded men who want meaningful relationships still exist out there. He’s interested in video games, comics, movies, travel, cooking up bad-looking but tasty dishes. He mostly likes to stay at home and pick up random hobbies. Currently, he is obsessed with 3D printing. Making action figures and then painting them. He recently got into a relationship where he believes he’s found “The One” because the time was right! Instagram - https://bit.ly/4flCJDl LinkedIn - / rishiraj-18a6065b Arjun Roy is an engineer by force, a hotelier by chance but one of the best chances that happened. He loves stories. Be it novels or movies. He runs a crowd favourite cafe in Mysore, India, called Roy’s Cafe where he is able to meet new people and hear new stories every day which he says broadens his horizons. He feels he was able to find his home and peace at the cafe. Arjun has a bone to pick on the marriage question. Whenever he has met someone new and tells them he is single/unmarried, their question is, “Why?” But he doesn’t see the same question being asked of married people! There is such an evident bias he feels needs to be addressed. He feels it cannot be, should not be, the norm. He understands that marriage is a necessity for some but that it can not and should not be looked at as a compulsion. Instagram - https://bit.ly/3YGbEmU Disha Gursahaney is a tax lawyer who would rather be underwater diving, but will settle for relaxing on a beach, reading a book, listening to music and/or staring at the sunset any day than being in a court of law. Based out of Bangalore (landlocked, yes she is aware), she is working at a global audit & tax firm, trying to maintain a work-life balance that lets her get in at least three workouts a week (new passion). Disha has recently gotten out of a 7-year relationship and feels it is a good time for her to spend some time with herself. She’s not actively looking for anything right now and is spending some time mapping out what she wants romantically and planning out all the things she wants to do professionally. The philosophy on which this is based is if one does not have an articulation of their own understanding of kindness, the giving and receiving of it becomes challenging as well. The idea is to empower people with the knowledge and confidence to #TryKindness and approach relationships with more curiosity than judgment. Join the tribe of audacious dreamers who believe that the world can change with a little more kindness!
