Coolidge, a Montana Ghost Town - Long Version - near the headwaters of Wise River in the Pioneer Mountains, SW of Butte, MT. Montana at its finest! Grand vista views of the Wise River reward you on your journey on the "Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway" near the continental divide of Montana. We made our way to the little-known ghost town of Coolidge traveling 70 miles on paved roads from Butte, five miles of gravel roads, and a quarter mile hike from the parking lot. Coolidge was created in 1913 to serve the Elkhorn Silver Mines. It was named after Calvin Coolidge who went on to be the 30th President of the United States. Elkhorn Creek flows through Coolidge, running into the Wise River and draining into the Big Hole River; some of the best blue-ribbon trout fishing in the state. The town sits rather high at 7,500 feet above sea level and the surrounding granite peaks top 10,000 feet in elevation. Some snowbanks were still visible although it was the end of May when this video was captured. Elkhorn Creek was running over its banks in places due to spring runoff. The winter sure takes its toll on the remaining buildings in town. Coolidge was not your typical mining town. It was built by William R. Allen to house his miners and did not support any churches or saloons, but alcohol was readily available from a still located nearby. Coolidge did have a school (now sitting in a new channel of the Elkhorn Creek) that served approximately 20 students. A large pool hall was built to help support 350 people who lived and worked here. The town had electricity, telephone service, and even a Post Office. Hot showers were provided at the mill along with a company store full of essentials needed by the miners and their families. This was a bustling community of hard-working men and supporting families. Although the operation had the state's largest mill (two acres in size) and had a narrow-gauge railroad, by 1932 the veins of ore could not economically support the operation. The mines were shut down, the post office closed, and the miners and their families moved on thus starting the demise of the structures you see today. This video was captured with a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camera and was edited with Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.
