This webinar was presented on Wednesday 23rd October 2024 by Dr. Stefan Anzelewicz from the Department of Surgery and Urology for Children and Adolescents, University Clinical Centre in Gdansk, and the Medical University of Gdansk, in Poland. He is a senior physician and paediatric surgery specialist. His main interests include image guided surgery, minimally invasive surgery, lasers in surgery, and long term results of surgical treatment in children. This webinar is aimed at healthcare professionals. The presentation explores duplex kidney anomalies—congenital duplications of the renal collecting system. We examine embryological development, anatomical classifications (complete and incomplete duplications), and associated ureteral variations like ureteroceles and ectopic ureters. Diagnostic modalities are discussed, highlighting ultrasonography, voiding cystourethrography, magnetic resonance urography, computed tomography, and nuclear medicine studies for accurate detection and functional assessment. Emphasis is placed on early and precise diagnosis to prevent long-term complications. We delve into contemporary treatment strategies, covering both conservative management and surgical interventions. Management of complications such as recurrent urinary tract infections, vesicoureteral reflux, obstruction, and impaired renal function is explored. Surgical options—including ureteral reimplantation, heminephrectomy, endoscopic procedures, and minimally invasive techniques—are evaluated regarding their indications, efficacy, and impact on patient outcomes. By integrating the latest research findings and clinical guidelines, this presentation aims to equip healthcare professionals with essential knowledge and practical approaches to effectively diagnose and treat duplex kidney anomalies, ultimately enhancing patient care. eUROGEN is the European Reference Network for rare and complex urogenital diseases and conditions.
