A weekend getaway to Bright, free camping nearby at Smoko. The Smoko free camp is by the Ovens River, about 15 minutes from Bright heading towards the High Country on the Great Alpine Road. It's a lovely campground, clean toilets and a fabulous bike and hiking trail passed through, going from Bright to Harrietville - home of the wonderful Harrietville Bakery with delicious Vanilla Slices and more (cash only) ☀️. We drove up Mt Hotham, with spectacular views! Then over to Mount Buffalo and up to the Horn for more spectacular views! Bush fires were, sadly, burning around the state and the smoke can be seen in the photos. There are no end to great places to eat, Bright Brewery, Tomahawks, Harrietville and Wandiligong Pubs. Sixpence in Bright for great coffee, Riff Raff cafe was a lovely breakfast spot with a shady rear garden with views to the Bright water play area, dog friendly too. Just out of Bright, on the Wandiligong Road, is a landing area for para gliders! Fun to watch, even more fun to do as tandem flights and lessons can be booked! We love to drive to Bright via the Black Spur to Yarck, then Mansfield and down over the Whitfield Road It's longer, but a terrific drive.
