Wide of Lars Olsen, spokesman for the ECCC (Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia) tribunal, talking with his colleague 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Lars Olsen, spokesman for the ECCC tribunal: "It is with regret that we have announced that Ieng Sary passed away this morning at 8.45 here at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital. We understand that many probably are disappointed with the fact that we can not complete the proceedings against Ieng Sary. And therefore we cannot determine whether the guilt or innocence of the charges brought against him. It is however important to remember that case 002 is not over. The charges against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan are not affected by the dead of Ieng Sary. So the proceedings in case 002 against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, will continue." 5. Wide of security inside hospital grounds 6. Wide of Sok Soan, 62, Khmer Rouge survivor, sitting on his auto-rickshaw 7. SOUNDBITE (Khmer) Sok Soan, 62, Khmer Rouge survivor: "Regarding the death of the Khmer Rouge leader (Sary), as a Cambodian who survived the regime, I am very sorry because these days the court was proceeding with the hearing against him and he died. Under the Khmer Rouge regime, he was responsible for the killing and splitting up of families. Therefore, if the court could have handed out the verdict against him before he died, I would have been happy. I could have accepted it. But now I am just sorry the trial was still under way." 8. Wide of Yi Chea, 72, Khmer rouge victim, sitting at her flower stall 9. SOUNDBITE (Khmer) Yi Chea, 72, flower seller, Khmer Rouge victim: "I am happy to hear that Ieng Sary died, because he was the mastermind of the murders under the Khmer Rouge regime. Under his regime, my husband, children and relatives were killed. I am sorry about his death, but only because he did not die by execution. He did not deserve to die naturally like this." 10. SOUNDBITE (Khmer) Yim Sopheak, 47, street vendor, Khmer Rouge victim: "I am absolutely not sorry about his death at all. I only wish he had died in prison. But I am sorry to hear that the court has spent money on serum and medicine for his treatment. To me, Ieng Sary deserved to die in prison, not in hospital. He should have died in the same way as he executed my parents and other people." 11. Wide of hospital where Ieng Sary died 12. Close up of sign, reads (English and Khmer) "Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital" STORYLINE Ieng Sary, who co-founded the brutal Khmer Rouge movement in the 1970s, died on Thursday morning while his trial for alleged war crimes was still in progress. He was 87. Sary was the public face abroad for the Khmer Rouge and decades later became one of its few leaders to be put on trial for the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians. His death before any verdict was reached in the lengthy case means that he will never be punished for his alleged war crimes, stemming from the darkest chapter in the country's history. Lars Olsen, spokesman for the ECCC (Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia) tribunal, confirmed Ieng Sary's death. "It is with regret that we have announced that Ieng Sary passed away this morning at 8.45 here at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital," he said. "We understand that many probably are disappointed with the fact that we can not complete the proceedings against Ieng Sary." They are both in their 80s, and there are fears that they could also die before justice is served.
