Sozopol is one of Bulgaria’s oldest towns, located on the Black Sea coast. Originally founded in the 7th century BCE by Greek settlers from Miletus, it was known as Apollonia Pontica, named after the god Apollo. The city flourished as a major trade and cultural center, famous for its massive statue of Apollo, which was later taken to Rome by the conquering Romans in the 1st century BCE. During the Middle Ages, Sozopol was an important Byzantine and Bulgarian port, often changing hands between the two empires. The town became a hub of Christianity, with many monasteries built in the area. By the Ottoman period, it declined but remained an active fishing and trading center. Today, Sozopol is renowned for its charming Old Town, featuring wooden houses from the 18th-19th centuries, as well as its rich archaeological sites. It’s also famous for the relics of Saint John the Baptist, discovered in 2010, which have boosted religious tourism. Sozopol blends history with modern seaside tourism, making it a top destination in Bulgaria.
