In this video, we'll take a walk around the serene Baphuon Temple, a "temple-mountain" with steep stairs leading visitors to a high terrace which offers one of the best views in all of Angkor Thom. Baphuon (Khmer: ប្រាសាទបាពួន) is a grand 11th century temple which is a symbolical representation of Mount Meru, a golden mountain that stands in the center of the universe & is the axis of the world in the Hindu, Jain & Buddhist cosmologies. It was built as the state temple of Suryavarman I (died c. 1050) dedicated specifically to Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. However, in later centuries it was converted from a Shiva temple into a Theravada Buddhist temple before being entirely abandoned sometime in the 16th century. The Baphuon consists of an impressive pyramidal structure that now forms a major part of Angkor city’s landscape of monuments. The three-story pyramidal structure includes multiple galleries, towers, gopuras (Indian-style entranceways), & a main sanctuary erected at the summit. The whole complex is enclosed by a thick rectangular sandstone wall. A long elevated sandstone walkway forms an approach & bridge on the eastern side. Its original appearance, decorated in bronze, apparently impressed Temür Khan's Yuan dynasty envoy Zhou Daguan (Chou Ta-Kuan 周達觀; 周达观) during his visit in 1296, who wrote about it: "the Tower of Bronze...a truly astonishing spectacle, with more than ten chambers at its base."
