The estate originally belonged to his first wife, now deceased; her mother and brother still live there and manage the farm. For many years the brother (Uncle Vanya) has sent the farm's proceeds to the professor, while receiving only a small salary himself. Sonya, the professor's daughter, who is about the same age as his new wife, also lives on the estate. The professor is pompous, vain, and irritable. He calls the doctor (Astrov) to treat his gout, only to send him away without seeing him. Astrov is an experienced physician who performs his job conscientiously, but has lost all idealism and spends much of his time drinking. The presence of Yelena introduces a bit of sexual tension into the household. Astrov and Uncle Vanya both fall in love with Yelena; she spurns them both. Meanwhile, Sonya is in love with Astrov, who fails even to notice her. Finally, when the professor announces he wants to sell the estate, Vanya, whose admiration for the man died with his sister, tries to kill him. Separated from the outside world with only a boat to connect their remote village to the mainland, the inhabitants of Kenozero Lake live the way their ancestors did for centuries gone by: the community is small, everyone knows each other and they produce only those things which are necessary for survival. The village Postman (Aleksey Tryaptisyn) is their sole connection to the outside world, relying on his motorboat to bridge the two civilizations. But when his boat’s motor is stolen and the woman he loves escapes to the city, the Postman follows, desperate for a new adventure and a new life. What follows is a journey of self-discovery, as the Postman is confronted with old demons, love and the realization that there is no place like home. "The Postman's White Nights" by Andrei Konchalovsky revives the subject of Russian village life, which he explored in his film "The Story of Asya Klyachina" and then again in "Ryaba My Chicken". Some Russian villages are so remote and badly connected to the outside word that their inhabitants live practically isolated from the state; they live in their own little world. Often the only representative of the state they know is the postman, the hero of Konchalovsky's newest film. Each village has its own fate, history and traditions. Understanding their people's values and learning from them how to be responsible for your own actions, is what Andrei Konchalovsky encourages us to do with this picture.
