This is an early 1980s attempt to free climb The Nose on El Capitan by Ron Kauk, Werner Braun and Bev Johnson. The idea of climbing The Nose free originated with Frank Sacherer in the early 1960s. Jim Bridwell accompanied Frank on an early attempt. Jim, along with John Long and Billy Westbay climbed The Nose in a day (NIAD) in 1975, still using direct aid on the more difficult pitches; "free as can be". The objective to climb it without using direct aid became the next major goal. This video shows one such attempt by leading climbers of that day. This route was climbed free by Lynn Hill in 1993 returning in 1994 to climb it free in one day. This was a spectacular achievement and marked a true end of the classical era of climbing in Yosemite Valley and the beginning of an amazing period of climbing walls without the use of direct aid, and in very short times. Thanks to "dogfather" for ripping his archival VHS recordings to DVD and distributing them to the climbing community. More about this can be found searching the SuperTopoForum, now itself an archive.
