Time for relaxation at the hotel to the noise of the air conditioner clattering away in the corner for ten hours. It's noisier than your AC or fan back home, but it certainly masks the sound of disturbing neighbors next door doing who knows what. Maybe that is why people don't complain often to the front desk about these classic units found in most hotels and motels. The sound: There is a noise component from the fan moving air, and also a pronounced 60 Hz tone with upper harmonics like 120 Hz, 240 Hz, 600 Hz, and 1200 Hz based on the motor spinning at 1200 Hz and phase locked to the 60 cycle frequency. It's a familiar sound in North America, while other continents use a slightly lower 50 Hz frequency such as this Australian Air Conditioner in a caravan (aka trailer) I recorded a few years back.    • Sleep to the Noise of an RV Air Condi...   The creation process: I spent 48 hours with this air conditioner while on a music tour and was compelled to record it while getting a good night's sleep.
