Kent County, Michigan Prosecutor Chris Becker is charging the white officer who shot Congolese immigrant Patrick Lyoya point-blank in the back of his head during what should have been a routine traffic stop. The Grand Rapids police officer who fatally shot Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop in April is charged with 2nd-degree murder. Prosecutor announced the charges Thursday against Grand Rapids Officer Christopher Schurr, weeks after Lyoya was killed following a chaotic traffic stop on April 4. Schurr has turned himself into the Michigan State Police and is expected to be arraigned Friday. Second-degree murder is a felony offense punishable by up to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
