Barred owls typically hatch between late March and April, with a peak around early April. Eggs are laid in early spring (often starting in March), and incubation lasts 28 to 33 days. The owlets are born covered in white down, with their eyes closed, and leave the nest roughly 4–5 weeks later. We are in Raleigh, NC. A barred owl has returned to nest on top of our chimney—just like last year—but this time we installed a full nest cam to capture every moment! In this video, you’ll see the owl settling in with two freshly laid eggs, reacting to the camera, and preparing her unusual rooftop nest.
