This spot combines functional importance with natural beauty, making it a popular destination for relaxation, photography, and light adventure. 🏞️ Historical & Structural Highlights Origins: Initial canal structure built in 1125 AD by Kongalvan Vettuva Gounder King under Chola sovereignty. The larger masonry dam seen today was later reconstructed in the 17th century using iron‑bars and lead mortar Engineering: A 20‑foot rock wall was carved and interlocked using iron rods and lead, with stones sourced from nearby hills and masons brought in from Odisha, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh . Irrigation reach: Creates two canals—Arakkankottai and Thadapalli—serving approximately 24,504 acres (~9,900 ha), especially nourishing sugarcane and paddy fields Here’s a detailed overview of Bhavanisagar Dam (also known as Lower Bhavani Dam), near Coimbatore and Erode in Tamil Nadu: 🏗️ Historical & Engineering Overview Constructed between 1948 and 1955, the Bhavanisagar Dam was the first major irrigation project in post-independence India, officially opened in 1956 at a cost of ₹210 million (~US$2.5 million) The dam spans 8 km in length and reaches about 40 m (130 ft) tall, making it one of the world’s largest earthen dams and the longest masonry dam in India 💧 Capacity & Hydrography Bhavani River feeds the dam, sourced from both eastern and western catchments of the Western Ghats including Upper Bhavani, Avalanche, Emerald, Moyar, and more Total storage capacity stands at 32.8 × 10⁹ cu ft (~32.8 TMC ft) at a full reservoir level of 120 ft (37 m) 🌾 Irrigation & Water Usage The dam supports irrigation over a vast area: Lower Bhavani Project Canal (LBP): ~103,000 acres Kalingarayan Canal: ~15,743 acres Thadapalli + Arakkankottai channels: ~24,504 acres erode. The LBP canal spans nearly 125 mi (~200 km) and serves Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur districts with irrigation water, making it one of Tamil Nadu’s key agricultural lifelines Government orders specify controlled water release every year—for example, from May to September 2025, up to 8,812.8 million cubic ft to irrigate 24,504 acres in Gobichettipalayam, Anthiyur, and Bhavani areas Town Panchayat ⚡ Hydropower Generation The dam hosts two hydroelectric power stations: one on the main river and another on the east bank canal. Each station generates 8 MW, delivering a combined capacity of 16 MW (≈21,000 hp) 🍃 Visitor Experience & Recreation The site features a garden, children’s play area, and boating facilities, making it a popular picnic destination Entry to the park is nominal (often around ₹ 5 per person). Visitors can also buy local snacks and fish fry from vendors near the reservoir Note: Dam-top access may be restricted for safety, and the site can get crowded during holidays Hope you like this video, please subscribe this channel & share this video with your friends. / simbaavlogs Other Channels: Bommi Cooking Channel: / @bommicookingchannel Please follow us, Instagram / simbaavlogs Facebook / simbaavlogs
