How to study aging with DNA methylation.

What does DNA methylation inform us about the aging process? Does the presence of absence of methyl marks merely reflect the aging process or could they be causal? What is the best way to characterise the epigenetic marks - what about considering variance and pair-wise changes of specific CpG sites? There are many unaddressed questions in the fields of epigenetics and aging - so where are we at?
