Ayahuasca is not for everyone. And everyone does not need Ayahuasca. It is a tool for those of us who never learned how to step into our own darkness. The unseen parts of ourselves that shape how we perceive and respond to the world. The medicine meets us there. In Shipibo it is Oni, Ayahuasca, the living spirit of the plants, and what I know as God moving through creation. As Ayahuasca has grown in popularity it has also been misused and misunderstood. The rise of exploitative tourism, greenwashing, and spiritual bypassing creates risks not only for seekers but also for the ecosystems and indigenous communities who safeguard this medicine. Protecting the people, the land, and the traditions is essential for Ayahuasca to be approached with the honor and respect it requires. For the Shipibo, the path of the curandero, master healer, takes a decade or longer. Onaya is their word for healer, translating to “one who knows” or “wisdom keeper”. This title is earned through years of sacrifice, study, and direct apprenticeship with the plants themselves. Every detail in a Shipibo ceremony has meaning. From the structure of the maloca to the dietas, each element creates a safe container for healing, refined through generations of listening, observing, and carrying wisdom forward. I choose to sit with Shipibo healers because their traditions feel deeply aligned with my path. Other indigenous cultures carry Ayahuasca through their own lineages. It’s important to find guides who honor those traditions through years of apprenticeship and devotion. Be cautious of those who shortcut this process or create practices without grounding in the indigenous wisdom that has preserved this medicine for centuries. It is worth seeking out those who carry this medicine with humility and integrity. This is not about judgment or discouragement. It is about awareness. protecting the roots of this medicine allows it to continue serving those who are truly called to it. Ayahuasca is not a trend. Approached with reverence, it holds the power to transform. #amazonrainforest #plantmedicine #healingjourney #ayahuascaceremony #indigenouswisdom
