4. BioPhotonics Where Light and Life Meet - 2021 Biophotonics Workshop

Webinar 4 of the 2021 Biophotonics Workshop at IPIC and Tyndall National Institute Twitter: @IPICIreland @TyndallInstitut @SaitoNogueira Instagram: @ipic_ireland @tyndall_institute @saitonogueira BioPhotonics Where Light and Life Meet In this webinar, Dr. Brian Wilson gives a big picture on the field of biophotonics by discussing (1) the advantages of light technologies for biological applications, (2) types of technologies and procedures in biophotonics, and (3) numerous applications divided into environment, food & agriculture, biomedical, (bio)security and forensic sectors. Dr. Brian Wilson is a world-leading researcher in the biophotonics in the field with numerous achievements including being the first recipient of the Michael S. Feld Biophotonics Award (2013) "for sustained contributions to the field of biophotonics, spanning over thirty years and encompassing outstanding research, technology development, clinical translation and training and education, in the areas of light dosimetry, photodynamic therapy fluorescence and Raman endoscopy, microscopy and nanophotonics" and also a recipient of the SPIE Britton Chance Biomedical Optics Award (2014) "in recognition of his many contributions to biomedical optics over the past 30 years, including his pioneering work in photodynamic therapy". Dr. Brian Wilson is Professor of Medical Biophysics at University of Toronto, Canada and a Senior Research Scientist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Following a PhD in particle physics, he has worked in biomedical physics practice and research in England, Australia and Canada. For the past 40 years this has focused on the applications of optical sciences and technologies (photonics) and, more recently, also nanotechnologies to address specific clinical needs, particularly in cancer diagnosis, treatment guidance and light based treatments. His research spans several disciplines and includes theoretical and experimental studies of light tissue interactions, clinical device and instrument development, optical imaging and spectroscopy, and photobiological experiments in cell and animal models of disease. His group works closely with different clinical specialists, including cancer surgeons, endoscopists, oncologists and interventional radiologists. He has held visiting scientist appointments in the USA, China, Brazil, Australia and Ireland, and most of his research has involved international collaborations. He has published over 450 peer reviewed papers and trained more than 50 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows
