To put it simply, Phelios is Namco's vertical R-Type. It has many cheap shots here and there, but when you learn to accept that it's a memo shmup, it's quite fun with its great stage design variety. I love it! In Phelios you can move, shoot, and... that's it. NO BOMBS. You have a hit point, but recoveries are rare. Might as well as treat it as a shield. The shot has 3 levels of power: normal, mid-charge and max-charge. This is the main gimmick of the game and essentially you have 3 weapons interchangeable by the fire rate! Since changing the rhythm isn't healthy for your fingers, best to assign many buttons for different purposes. The Arcade Archives port prepared just that. You can also have 3 options at the same time, but it may be to your detriment. More on that later. The best thing is the stage design. Each segments require different tactics! Some require you max charge shots since you need the piercing property, others you need to spread your options out, and so on. It does make memorization heavy, but with such memorable stage design it's easy to remember which needs what. Though many parts it can be as cheap as you must remember which pixel you must be at. Watch out for those. The worst thing is the rank system! From what I've heard, it's determined by your survival time and the amount of options you have. There are some bullet increases, but it mainly affects your DPS! On no options and low rank, some enemies can be finished off with just 2 max charge shots. But with options, you will need about 4 or far more! It's the most apparent when you fight the true final boss where when you fight him with max options, he is virtually invincible and you'll time out the fight before he is finished! So two things: be aware of your current option count and the more you have, the more shot-stacking you need to do, and when you die, don't give up! Your rank gets lowered each time you die. Boss fights will get easier upon death! Qualms aside, this is a unique and fun shmup. Check it out! One short note. On wikipedia it is said that Easy and Hard has different endings. No, that's not true. Hard has more stages and has a true final boss, but otherwise the ending is the same. Who wrote that? It's as if they don't double check the endings by at least seeing the game in action on Youtube! If the writer is a professional journalist, then their journalism must be questioned harshly. The game is the Arcade Archives version. Nintendo eShop: https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/ar... #stg #shmup #nintendoswitch
