Multiple humpback whales were seen swimming closely together off Maui, Hawaiʻi during peak whale season. In March, humpback whales in Hawaiʻi are typically on their breeding and calving grounds, where they gather to mate, give birth, and care for calves. When several whales swim tightly together like this, one common explanation is that you’re seeing a competitive group: usually a female with one or more males closely escorting or competing for position near her. Another possibility is that this is an escort group involving a mother and calf, with nearby males or other whales interacting around them. NOAA notes that Hawaiʻi’s humpback whales spend winter in these warm waters to mate, give birth, and raise young, and sanctuary researchers describe breeding-season behavior that includes escorting, competition, and male displays. Of course, behavior at the surface can be hard to interpret with certainty from video alone. Humpback interactions can shift quickly, and scientists note that some reproductive behavior remains difficult to directly observe. Still, tight grouping and active movement in Maui during March are very consistent with the social and reproductive activity that makes Hawaiʻi one of the world’s most important humpback whale winter habitats.
