In the 1700s a small healthcare dispensary was opened to the public, as patient numbers increased over the years plans were eventually laid to build a large infirmary. The hospital opened in 1900, a 234 bed general hospital with nine wards, an infectious disease block, a chapel and multiple nurses houses. By the time of its closure, the hospital was severely outdated and overcrowded. It had no operating theatres and surgery was being carried out at patients beds, plans for a new building were put into action. It closed its doors as an infirmary in 1987, once the new hospital was in action, leaving the majority of the site abandoned, the main block was used as a nursing home until 2008, it then became completely abandoned. Part of the site was redeveloped into flats 1995, the nurses houses were also converted in 2005. A large section remains in a severely decayed state. This dilapidated shell will hopefully one day be redeveloped like the rest of the site.
