An orange shirt hanging on a steel bar marks the trail entry, though the official welcome sign is oddly placed several metres into the bush—completely hidden from view at the parking lot. The trail actually begins on the opposite side of the road from where I parked, and from the start, the fall colours made every step worthwhile. Before long, we came across an impressive wall of bedrock, where the terrain grew more rugged and required a bit of scrambling to reach the next level. Soon after, we were rewarded with one of those classic Killarney Provincial Park vantage points. Somewhere along the way, trail markers disappeared, but we carried on toward Silver Peak, the highest point in the La Cloche Range at 540 metres above sea level. From up here, the lake below looked just as beautiful as it had from the top of the cliff earlier in the hike. After a short walk back to the parking lot, we decided to explore more of the Killarney region. The La Cloche Silhouette Trail forms a 78-kilometre loop that passes some of the park’s most iconic spots, including Silver Peak, The Crack, and Topaz Lake. With about 50 backcountry campsites available, permits can be tough to secure during peak season. George Lake serves as the main launching point for both paddlers and hikers heading into the park’s interior, though it’s also a great place to simply spend a few days enjoying the surroundings. As much as we love Killarney, we chose to spend the rest of the day along the shore of Georgian Bay—one of my favourite places. Words can’t quite capture how much I love this landscape, so instead, I’ll let a friend’s song speak for me. Thanks for watching. If you like this kind of content, please like and subscribe.
